Cross River State, Habours the last pristine tropical rainforest in Nigeria. Here, you can find complex biodiversity of flora and fauna endemic to the region. Of particular interest are the three great Apes. Unfortunately, this treasure is being threatened by logging, farming, hunting, and large scale development projects that undermines this natural realm. These detrimental human activities over the years have resulted in a reduction of the pristine forest cover with a corresponding reduction and loss of species.
We, at ECODEV are working towards maintaining the balance between the conservation of this rich biological diversity and the developmental aspirations of communities.
Projects regarding this issue include
1. Designing an integrated rural development scheme
and a rural economic plan based on the use and
development of Forest products, (non wood).
2. Carrying out agroforestry projects based on the
use of indigenous and exotic species to reclaim
degraded lands.
3. We are experimenting positive farming models that act to support the Earth. Researching more economically beneficial and environmentally friendly sources of income. Ventures like intensive farming, value added crops, organic Agriculture etc.
4.Also, we are working towards a better economic value, for Forest products, which are growing naturally in large expanse within Community forests.
5. Encouraging eco-tourism and forest bassed researh as well as desuade people from forest destroing activities, through the establishment of community forest reserves, eco agriculture and nature tours etc.
